What Counts as a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency is any situation that involves severe pain, uncontrolled bleeding, trauma to the teeth or mouth, or signs of infection. If you're unsure whether your situation is an emergency, it's always better to call—we can help you determine the appropriate level of care.
Common Dental Emergencies
- Severe toothache or dental pain — Intense, persistent pain may indicate infection, abscess, or advanced decay.
- Knocked-out tooth — Time is critical. Handle the tooth by the crown (not the root), keep it moist, and get to a dentist within 30 minutes if possible.
- Cracked, chipped, or broken tooth — Depending on severity, this may require immediate treatment to prevent further damage or infection.
- Lost filling or crown — An exposed tooth is vulnerable to damage and sensitivity.
- Abscess or infection — Facial swelling, fever, or a pimple-like bump on the gums may indicate a serious infection requiring urgent attention.
- Uncontrolled bleeding after extraction or trauma — Some bleeding is normal, but persistent bleeding needs professional attention.
- Dental trauma from accident or injury — Any injury to the mouth, teeth, jaw, or gums should be evaluated promptly.

Managing Pain Until Your Appointment
While waiting to see us, there are steps you can take to manage discomfort:
- Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed (avoid aspirin if there's bleeding)
- Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling
- Rinse gently with warm salt water
- Avoid very hot or cold foods and drinks
- Don't apply aspirin or any medication directly to the gums

Depending on the situation, emergency treatment may include pain relief, infection management with antibiotics, temporary or permanent restorations, tooth extraction when necessary, and referral to a specialist when appropriate.
